FAQ's

What is birdwatching?

About how many kinds of birds are there?
There are about 556 kinds of birds in Arizona only. Imagine how many birds are in the whole world!

How do birds survive when they are so small?
Loggerhead Shrikes spear their food on the barbs of barbed wire fences to come and eat them later. They want to save up food for the winter.  Crickets, tiny birds, and bugs make up their diet. Also, they can lower their body temperature, heart rate, and general body functions to survive cold.

 How smart are birds?
The Woodpecker Finch from the Galápagos Islands uses a twig to pry insects out of bark, as does the Caledonian Crow, who uses its beak to sharpen sticks into hooks which are used to probe into holes to extract insects. Even turkeys know whether things are safe to eat or not.

What are some ways birds avoid predators?
Some birds just fly away. Others plainly build their nests in safe places. Turkeys instinctively know the difference between venomous snakes and safe snakes. They protect themselves from dangerous snakes by going around in a circle and stomping on the ground, confusing the snake.
